    abstract = {Local energy communities (LECs) are quickly gaining popularity and have considerable potential to benefit their participants as well as the overall energy system, but they may also have a destabilizing effect if implemented in an uncoordinated fashion. Project ECOSINT aims to develop a unified and modular information and communications technology (ICT) architecture for seamless, large-scale integration of LECs into the overall energy system in to ensure that their benefits can be fully lifted. Following a holistic approach, this process involved the elicitation and formalization of requirements from all involved stakeholders as a basis for the development of this architecture. This paper outlines, how these requirements have been collected and formalized using state of the art methods. Furthermore, the requirements are presented and examples of the results of the formalization process are given.},

    abstract={The engineering of vehicular systems is becoming increasingly difficult, mainly due to the ongoing integration of cyber-physical systems (CPS) aiming to automate difficult tasks or provide additional features to drivers. This automation potential leads to increasing complexity when engineering the vehicle itself or its subcomponents. In particular the development of a future-oriented kind of mobility, namely, connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), is accompanied by new challenges, leading back to the different domains to be considered. To cope with this complexity and enable the mutual engineering of vehicular embedded systems, the Software Platform Embedded Systems (SPES) framework provides viewpoints and hierarchy layers in the shape of a matrix. However, to address all domains considered during the development of CAVs, the SPES methodology lacks specifications of how to model such vehicles across multiple domains, which impede its utilization in actual industrial projects. Thus, to deal with the mentioned issues, this article introduces an architecture framework enabling model-based systems engineering (MBSE) of CAVs across multiple domains. This includes a domain-specific reference architecture mapping, a particular development process, a detailed architecture definition, and a corresponding modeling approach. Subsequently, the resulting methodology is then evaluated for applicability using a real-world case study on the charging process of an electric vehicle (EV). The outcome of this article will thereby increase the usability of the SPES framework for industrial projects on the one hand and counteract the increasing complexity when engineering vehicular systems on the other hand.}

    abstract = {Numerous studies, including the results of the FFG-funded exploratory study “Fu-ture Network Tariffs”, clearly show, that the integration of Local Energy Communities (LECs) into the energy grid is associated with challenges as well as with opportunities. It has also become clear, that a holistic view on LECs from all relevant perspectives is necessary to en-sure that the goals can be met and that LECs are integrated into the grid in a way that is bene-ficial to it (e.g., by providing flexibilities, reducing feed-in and consumption peaks or main-taining resilience) rather than detrimental (e.g., by increasing peaks or negatively influencing simultaneities). The research project ECOSINT deals with the intelligent, digital integration of LECs into the overall system. To that end, a system-holistic analysis is performed to identify the goals, opportunities, and requirements regarding the integration of LECs. Based on this analysis, an extensible, modular, and scalable IT system architecture that incorporates security and privacy by design will be conceptualized to serve as a basis for the integration of LECs into the overall system as well as for their operation. Thereby, a consistent foundation that enables system-friendly and safe integration of LECs is created. This document provides a brief overview of the background, the goals, the planned results as well as of the project flow and the current progress of the project.},

    abstract = {Blockchains are proposed for many application domains apart from nancial transactions. While there are generic blockchains that can be molded for specific use cases, they often lack a lightweight and easy-to-customize implementation. In this paper, we introduce the core concepts of blockchain technology and investigate a real-world use case from the energy domain, where customers trade portions of their photovoltaic power plant via a blockchain. This does not only involve blockchain technology, but also requires user interaction. Therefore, a fully custom, private and permissioned blockchain is implemented from scratch. We evaluate and motivate the need for blockchain technology within this use case, as well as the desired properties of the system. We then describe the implementation and the insights from our implementation in detail, serving as a guide for others and to show potential opportunities and pitfalls when implementing a blockchain from scratch.},

    abstract={There has been a large number of contributions on privacy-preserving smart metering with Differential Privacy, addressing questions from actual enforcement at the smart meter to billing at the energy provider. However, exploitation is mostly limited to application of cryptographic security means between smart meters and energy providers. We illustrate along the use case of privacy preserving load forecasting that Differential Privacy is indeed a valuable addition that unlocks novel information flows for optimization. We show that (i) there are large differences in utility along three selected forecasting methods, (ii) energy providers can enjoy good utility especially under the linear regression benchmark model, and (iii) households can participate in privacy preserving load forecasting with an individual membership inference risk <60{\%}, only 10{\%} over random guessing.},

However, due to the unsupervised nature of the problem, previous work only applied the algorithms on a few typical cases and lacks a systematic validation. This paper systematically validates the existing algorithm by visual inspection and shows that numerous cases exist, where implicit assumptions are not met and the methods fail. Moreover, it proposes a new, very simple rule-based method which is in principle able to overcome these problems. This method should be seen as a first step towards improvement, since it is not automated and needs a moderate amount of human intervention for each household.},

    abstract = {In this work we propose a secure communication concept for the protection of critical power supply and distribution infrastructure. Especially, we consider the line current differential protection method for modern smart grid implementations. This protection system operates on critical infrastructure, and it requires a precise time behavior on the communication between devices on both ends of a protected power line. Therefore, the communication has to fulfill deterministic constraints and low-delay requirements and additionally needs to be protected against cyber attacks. Existing systems are often either costly and based on deprecated technology or suffering from maloperations. In order to allow for both, economical and reliable operation, we present the first holistic communication concept capable of using state-of-the-art packet switched networks. Our solution consists of three parts: (i) we develop a list of design requirements for line current differential protection systems communication; (ii) we propose a communication concept obeying these design requirements by combining cryptographical and physical security approaches; and (iii) we evaluate our solution in a practical setup. Our evaluation shows a clock accuracy of 3 µs with a resilience to asymmetric delay attacks down to 8 ns/s. This demonstrates the secure and fault-free operation of a line current differential protection system communicating over a state-of-the-art network.},

Here, we assess the effects of 11 network tariff scenarios on household budgets using real load profiles from 765 households. Thus we explore the possibly disruptive impact of applying peak-load-based tariffs on the budgets of households when they have been mainly charged for consumed volumes before. Our analysis estimates the change in household network expenditure for different combinations of energy, peak and fixed charges, and can help to design tariffs that recover the costs needed for the sustainable operation of the grid.},

IPsec has previously been proposed to be part of the security concept of the protection interface.     abstract ={The ability to detect appliances in load data highly depends on the resolution of the data. While a lot of related work exists on detecting appliances in second or sub-second granularity load data, in this paper, we detect swimming pools through their filter pumps in load data with the 15-minute granularity prescribed by the European Union for smart meters. We model the filter pump based on exemplary measurements and describe a prototypical algorithm to extract the filter pump's consumption from the aggregated mains signal of a real-world household. We evaluate pool detection performance with different classifiers on a data set with 843 households, where the information on the existence of a swimming pool is available. We achieve 94.8% detection accuracy with a precision of 68.5% with an off-the-shelf classifier. Decreasing the temporal resolution in several steps to 8 hours negatively affects the recall while the precision stays at the same level. We find that these results raise privacy concerns even at the minimum temporal resolution of smart meter data that is legally required in the European Union.},

Although holiday detection may seem easier than occupancy detection, it is shown that occupancy detection methods must at least be adapted when used for holiday detection. A new, unsupervised method for holiday detection that applies classification algorithms on a suitable re-formulation of the problem is presented. Several algorithms were applied to a big, realistic smart metering dataset that – compared to existing datasets for occupancy detection – is unique in terms of number of households (869) and measurement duration ({\textgreater}1 year) and has a realistic low time resolution of 15 minutes. This allows for more realistic checks of seemingly plausible but unconfirmed assumptions. This work is merely a first starting point for further research in this area with more research questions raised than answered. While the results of the algorithms look plausible in a visual analysis, testing for data with ground truth is most importantly needed.},

As a case study the remote shutdown process has been modeled and a threat analysis was conducted leading to an extensive attack tree.
